Day 7 4AM Update: Bright Skies in Beijing Provide Full Day of Olympic Action

Well everyone has been talking about the bright blue skies that have shown up in the city of Beijing. It appears that yesterday's storms have brought about the best weather that we have seen thus far at these Olympics. And bright weather means a full day of action, and we have seen a lot of competition already on Day 7 of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Baseball: Cuba Beats United States in Extra Innings
So far, Olympic baseball has been competitive. And given that this is the last Olympic Games where we'll see baseball indefinitely, international baseball fans should take up the opportunity. Earlier today, in a possible preview of a potential gold medal match, Cuba defeated the United States in extra innings, allowing the the defending champions to stay undefeated while the U.S. fell to a 1-2 record following a loss to South Korea and a win over the Netherlands earlier in the tournament.

Cuba won by a score of 5-4 in a game that implemented the new extra innings rule that has been put into effect in international baseball. Beginning with the 11th inning, the batting team puts runners at first and second and can start at any point in the batting order. It's meant to speed up the game and also prevent a team from using up all its pitchers.

Maybe MLB should take note. That rule would have been useful at last month's All Star Game.

The Hottest Couple of the Olympic Games
This is an interesting story that came off the Associated Press wires. Apparently they're the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie of the Olympic Games. Matthew Emmons of the United States and his wife Katerina, a shooter from the Czech Republic, have been seen smooching and hugging each time one or the other has been competing. Matthew met Katerina in Athens four years ago after Matthew lost the gold medal when he shot into the wrong target.

They eventually hit it off and got married and in Beijing, the two have not been shy to express their love and support from one another. In competition, Katerina won the first gold medal of these games while Matt Emmons won silver earlier today in the Men's 50m Rifle Prone Shooting Event.

They are currently playing their round of 16 match right now against Japan. Federer, who lost yesterday in singles against James Blake, looks to do the same as he is playing his doubles match right now against Indonesia. Meanwhile, Blake is playing his semifinal match against defending gold medalist from Athens, Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.
