Day 1 7:30AM Update - Entering the First Night of Olympic Competition

Well, so far we've seen four sets of Olympic medals given out in a variety of sports. And tonight, we're getting set to see a few more. 

RIGHT NOW:
- Gold medal bouts in judo in the men's 60 kg and the women's 48kg. 

- Semifinals and medal bouts in women's individual sabre of fencing.
The United States s guaranteed a gold medal after Sada Jacobson advanced into the finals. She will meet one of two Americans, either Mariel Zagunis or Rebecca Ward, who are facing off in their semifinal bout right now.

- Preliminary bouts in boxing

- Preliminary games in women's volleyball, handball, soccer and basketball. 
Norway will face New Zealand while Brazil plays North Korea in women's soccer. Meanwhile, the United States will face the Czech Republic in their opening game of women's basketball. 

LATEST NEWS *SPOILERS*
China has now won two gold medals after Pang Wei won the men's air pistol competition in shooting. This follows up the win in weightlifting by Chinese weightlifter Chen Xiexia in the light flyweight competition.

The men's road race concluded with another Spanish rider winning the cycling event. Samuel Sanchez won the gold medal just two weeks after Carlos Sastre captured the Tour de France. 

Korea defeated Brazil in preliminary round women's basketball action. The game was decided in overtime by a score of 68-62. And Germany guaranteed that they will progress to the knockout stage of the women's soccer competition after defeating Nigeria by a score of 1-0. With their second win and one game left in preliminary play, the World Cup finalists  have secured a spot in the group stage. The United States kept their medal hopes alive after a 1-0 win over Japan. 

Also, news coming out this morning that an American tourist has been killed and his wife injured after a random attack by a Chinese man. The attacker then jumped to his death. The American tourists were reportedly stabbed. For more info, click here at NYTimes.com

ON TV: 
Brazil vs. North Korea in women's soccer NOW on MSNBC, and beach volleyball currently now on USA Network. 

Later, catch the USA Women's basketball team playing against Czech Republic on USA Network and the men's cycling road race on NBC starting at 10AM.
