Redemption for Slovakia's Martikan in Canoe Slalom
BEIJING, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Slovakia’s Michal Martikan won the men’s singles slalom canoe Olympic gold medal on Tuesday, beating Britain’s David Florence. Australia’s Robin Bell, last year’s world championship bronze medallist, finished third.France’s double Olympic champion Tony Estanguet finished a distant ninth. Martikan, who won the event in 1996 but took silver behind Estanguet in both 2000 and 2004, won by a wide margin, despite receiving several time penalties for hitting gates in both of his final runs.
