Day 3 2AM Update: Medals Awarded in Shooting, Upset In Badminton

The news from swimming is still buzzing but there is other competition on Day 3 of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Tennis: Serena Williams, Nadal Advances
Rafael Nadal needed three sets to get out of the first round of tennis competition in Beijing. He defeated Italian Potito Starace, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in a match that lasted two hours and 15 minutes. Meanwhile, Roger Federer will play Russian Dimitry Tursunov on center court in a few moments

Serena Williams just won her first round match over Olga Govortsova of Belarus in a match that began yesterday. Williams won 6-3, 6-2 and will face Samantha Stosur in the next round.

Shooting: India Wins First Gold on Final Shot in Men's Air Rifle

BEIJING (AP)—Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in the 10-meter air rifle Monday, giving India its first medal of the Olympics.

The 2006 world champion entered the final in third place but overtook China’s Zhu Qinan and Finland’s Henri Hakkinen by scoring 104.5 points for the title.

Bindra finished with 700.5 points, edging out Zhu who had 699.7 points for the silver. Zhu won the gold medal in 2004. Hakkinen got the bronze with 699.4.

Zhu’s second place finish gives the Chinese three medals in the shooting competition after Guo Wenjun won the women’s 10-meter air pistol and Pang Wei took the men’s.

Badminton: Women's Doubles Defending Champs Eliminated

BEIJING, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Unseeded Japanese badminton duo Maeda Miyuki and Suetsuna Satoko rallied from near defeat to eliminate defending Olympic champions Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen in the women’s doubles on Monday.

The top seeded Chinese had two points to win the match at 19-16 in the second game, but committed a series of errors and lost it 23-21. The rattled Yang and Zhang crumbled in the second half of game three, giving up 12 of the final 17 points to go down 14-21.

Spanish Cyclist Fails Drug Test

Disappointing news coming out of Beijing as a female Spanish cylist has reportedly failed a drug test. Maria Isabel Moreno was kicked out of the Beijing Olympic Games after testing positive for EPO, a blood-boosting hormone that enhances endurance. Moreno was scheduled to take part in the women's individual time trial later this week. She is the first athlete to fail a drug test at these games, where athletes are being tested rigorously.

Freestyle Relay Win Puts United States Ahead of China in Medal Count

The thrilling U.S. victory in the men's 4x100 meter freestyle relay at the Water Cube earlier today put the United States at the top of the medal count. Though China has more golds than the United States, the Americans have captured 11 total medals compared to China's nine. But that may change when China competes in the Men's Diving 10m Synchro Final in less than a half hour.
